Madhukar Sabnavis is a gold medallist in BA(Honours) Mathematics from St Stephen’s College Delhi and a PGDM from IIM Ahmedabad- batch of 1983-85.He is a ‘blue blooded’ advertising man, starting his career is Clarion Advertising in 1985 and moving to Ogilvy and Mather India in 1988. He worked there till August 2022, where he retired as Vice Chairman and Director-Client Relations, Ogilvy, India. He is today, a part-time consultant to Ogilvy India.During his 38 years in advertising, he has worked on and helped create campaigns across brands and categories for clients like Allen Solly, Amazon, Asian Paints, Bajaj, Cadbury, Glaxo Food Products, ICICI Bank, ITC Ltd, Max Life, Perfetti, RHL (now P &G) Star TV, Tata Sky, Titan, Tata Oil Mills, Vodafone Idea to name a few. He set up a second agency brand for Ogilvy in India- RMG David in 2000 which has evolved to 82.5. He also set up the planning function in Ogilvy India in 2002 and was part of the team that has made Ogilvy India one of the most awarded Effective Agency in the country.In his role as Planning head, he has developed workshop tools like Ogilvy Open Source, Ogilvy Combat and Ogilvy vision to develop multiple solutions for business and communication problems. He also created planning tools like Media Ethnography and Semiotics of Communication to understand consumers and brand communication.He enjoys mentoring and developing people. He partnered the Talent function in 2004 to set up an internal program called ‘Hero Awards’ that recognised individuals across functions. (It has since evolved to Ogilvy All Stars). He was part of the WPP team that set up the WPP ISDI school of communication in Mumbai and built partnership for WPP with Xynteo to promote sustainable business practises in Corporate India.Over the years, he has had articles published in Business Standard and Brand Equity. And has taught in leading business schools like MICA, IIM Kolkata and IIM Bengaluru. He has also done training sessions for industry bodies like AAAI, Ad Club and Bombay Chamber of Commerce.
His is passionate about consumers, communication, brand and business and the connections between them. His interests beyond advertising are cricket, hindi movies and understanding culture.
