The global #MeToo movement, which gained momentum in India in 2018, highlighted the problem of sexual harassment at workplace and the need for organisations and leadership to take decisive action against this malaise. Based on the precepts of the 1997 Supreme Court judgment in Vishaka vs State of Rajasthan, India legislated on the subject in the form of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (“POSH Act”). Unfortunately, awareness about this subject remains low and and consequently implementation of the POSH Act has been weak.
Ms. Attreyi Mukherjee, is a corporate lawyer with over 16 years of experience. She has a focus on gender issues and speaks a various forums on the topic of sexual harassment at workplace, gender discrimination and gender sensitisation. Attreyi has co-authored successive editions of a book on the law of sexual harassment at workplace, published by Thomson Reuters. She is also a member of the Governance & Ethics Committee of the BCCI.
