Workshop on Challenges ahead of International Trade in 2019 - May 08, 2019

Context :

Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) pave way for market access. There are primarily two issues when it comes to FTAs, existing and under negotiation. The first problem is that our attitude towards FTAs is more towards protecting domestic market from competition therefore our approach is defensive, very rarely we demand reduction in import duties in partner countries. This is again because there is little awareness about the FTAs particularly in SME sector.

The world is moving towards digitalization, so is India, signing of Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) has speeded up the digitalization process particularly in customs programs like E-Sanchit etc. have already been put into the action. Complete paperless documentation process for clearance of imported goods, exported goods (filing Bill Of Entry,Shipping Bill electronically) have been in progress. Needless to say, electronic connectivity would be the aim of the Government, also of the industry to reduce transaction costs.

We hear of Blockchain very often, However, the applicability of blockchain to our actual business is still not really understood. Blockchain is next technological up gradation in the area of shipping and logistics, Marine insurance and Banking and Finance. In other words, it covers the entire ecosystem of International Trade.

It is therefore imperative that, International Trade community must understand the concept of Blockchain. You may be an exporter, importer, freight forwarder, CHA or Consultant, Blockchain impacts you in your field of operation.
