Seminar on Innovative Building Materials, Eco-labelling and Environmental Declarations - Jul 19, 2018

Introduction :

The world is gearing up to face sustainability challenges across all industry sectors. Building construction sector, particularly building materials are no exception, being a major source of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission. Approximately 3 billion tonnes of raw materials, 50% of the total flow in the global economy, is used for the production of building materials. Within the construction industry, performance of buildings and the materials from which they are constructed is increasingly being scrutinized. Design professionals are looking at life cycle assessment (LCA) to evaluate building performance and environmental impact of their projects. To support this analysis, environmental product information is needed for construction materials and products. For example, Green Building rating schemes like LEED or GRI-HA are rewarding credits for sustainable materials on the basis of verified and validated environmental claims, labelling and declarations.  The Niti Aayog in 2017 put forward a Strategy Paper to address resource efficiency in selected sectors including construction. With a broader push for green production and consumption that includes resource efficient products and services, there is a potential to develop green product certification, eco-labelling and green marketing. The National Building Code 2016 includes a specific section on “sustainability in construction”. Designers are invited to select materials taking into account their Life Cycle impacts. There is an emerging need for credible, accurate and transparent environmental impact information on building materials. At the same time, information on the alternatives to the conventional materials is also required for the shift towards sustainability.

To address the issue Bombay Chamber of Commerce & Industry is organising seminar on Innovative Building Materials, Eco-labelling and Environmental Declarations.
