Wage Limit for Coverage of Employees Under Esi Act, 1948 Increased To Rs. 21,000/- Per Month, 1st January, 2017.   Dec 27, 2016

The Central Government vide notification dated 22nd December, 2016, has amended Rule 50 of the Employees’ State Insurance (Central) Rules, 1950, whereby the words “fifteen thousand rupees” occurring in the Rule and the proviso have been substituted with the words “twenty one thousand rupees”.

The amended Rule now reads as under :
“Rule 50. The wage limit for coverage of an employee under sub-clause (b) of clause (9) of Section 20 of the Act shall be twenty one thousand rupees a month. Provided that an employee whose wages (excluding remuneration for overtime work) exceed twenty one thousand a month at any time after and not before the beginning of the contribution period, shall continue to be an employee until the end of that period”.
